The HunTer Fondo
Saturday September 13th, 2025

The ride is in honour of our friend and cycling enthusiast John Hunter, but the ride is for everyone who has been affected by cardiac arrest, heart attacks, or heart failure.
All event proceeds are donated.
Event Start Times
In the spirit of ‘choose your own adventure’, we will have groups heading out at their discretion.
There is not a ‘mass start’. If you are riding slower, or plan to hit multiple Bonus Waypoints, you should plan to start earlier.
Groups may start at any time based on their intended distance and speed. Suggested start time based on an average pace of 28 K/hr (including stops). If you are not part of a group, we will organize you into a group.
Please plan to finish your ride no later than 1:00.
125 KM It's going to be Easy Ride
07:00 - 07:30
75 KM Frappe la Rue
09:00 - 9:30
50K Pastry Peddler
10:00 - 10:30
30K Gravel Heaven
10:30 - 11:00
You are welcome to start earlier if you are going to the bonus waypoints and/or want more time at the support stations.
Poker Run and Prizes!
Choose your own Adventure. Pick a 'estimated distance' that will get you to waypoints where you will get a playing card. Stretch yourself and hit bonus waypoints for extra cards and even wildcards to improve your poker hand
There are also Strava segment awards (not just the fastest), draws and other awards.
What? A Poker Run?
- You pick a basic distance (30, 50, 75, or 125).
- Each route will has a number of 'waypoints' to collect cards.
- Routes also have bonus waypoints, riding to them gets you extra cards to improve your hand. You will increase your distance - the harder ones (i.e. with big climbs) may earn you a Wildcard. (Note: some waypoints are not supported and you will just pick up a poker chip.)
- We will have publish Strava routes for the basic routes. It is up to you to navigate to the bonus sites.
- Waypoints can be reached a number of ways. The trade-off is road surface, hills, and distance. Choose the adventure, stay on the paved roads, gravel and rail trail options, and maybe even a fire route.
- When you return to 100 Acre Brewing, you will check-in with your hand. For each Poker Chip you will draw a card from a deck and complete your hand by selecting your 5 best cards.
- See image roll-over for poker hand rankings. (With multiple decks and wild-cards you may have a 5-of-a-kind hand. This will be treated as a 4 of a kind with the 5th card being your high card.

Road Update
We have made a couple small changes to our suggested routes to avoid any remaining construction.
Update Sep 11th: Both Larmer and Syer Roads are now hard pack gravel with minimal loose pebbles and reasonable to ride on a road bike. 50K (if hitting Bonus waypoints) and 75K may find it best to use Tapley 1/4 line to Syer to reach Syer & County Rd 10 Waypoint.

The HunTer Fondo Routes
GRAVEL TRAIL RIDE 30K
This is route has one official waypoint. Riders that just want a quiet ride on the Hastings Trail and as an out and back, you can tailor to your perfect distance. Ride out to Lang Pioneer Village and where you will be able to pickup snacks get your new cards at the finish area.
Riders can do a loop through Lang Village and head back to 100 Acre Brewing in just under 30K.
If you are looking for more distance you can expand the loop around Lang Village and take Hope Mill Rd to David Fife or Settlers Line for some variety or continue on the Hastings Trail as far as you wish.
Route Waypoints:
Lang Pioneer Village Entrance
Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Playing Hand
You will start with three cards, collect a card at Lang Pioneer Village, and complete your hand when you get back to 100 Acre Brewing. There are no bonus waypoints, but you can purchase an extra card(s) for a better chance to win.
Strava Segments Awards
Each ride will have Strava segments where we award prizes.
1. JHFondo-Coming Home Heritage to Keene
We will have a KOM prize for top M/F over this 9 KM segment. https://www.strava.com/segments/37733755
PASTRY PEDDLER RIDE: 50 KM
This route is about the getting to the Pastry Peddler in Millbrook to visit the local favourite coffee/bakery and then back.
The main route heads south on Crowley Line to County Rd 2 where you will find the first waypoint at Fourth Line after the S-bend climb. Taking Fourth to reach Wallace Point Road with straight run into Millbrook. After a stop at Pastry Peddler you can take on the bonus climb up Prison Hill or head back to 100 Acre Brewing on the north-west side of the Otonabee River.
We recommend the Bonus Waypoints.
Route Waypoints:
1. County Rd 2 and Fourth line: Cards only
There will be no event volunteers at the station, please take one token and proceed on route.
2. Pastry Peddler: Support Station
Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Pastry Peddler open for coffee and other purchases
3. Matchett & Wallace Point Road, Stewart Hall: Cards only
There will be direction signs pointing to location.
Bonus Card Waypoint:
1. County Rd 21 & Tapley ¼ Line (adds 7 KM)
This one is wildcard and well worth the climb up “Prison Hill” – not only do you get a bonus wildcard there is a Strava Segment which you could win. As an out and back, or ‘up and down’ you will add 7 KM to your route.
2. Syer Line & County Rd 10, Go Transit Parking lot (4 KM)
If you already climbed “Prison Hill”, so why turn back now? We suggest going north on ¼ Tapley to Larmer Line (Syer is under construction and potentially very rough shape), then a short run up County Rd 10 to Syer. See note on What John would do.
Both bonus stops put total distance just under 65KM. Just this bonus (from Pastry Peddler) would add 7 KM.
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
What would John Do?
John would definitely enjoy the Pastry Peddler stop and use it fuel the bonus and an attact on the Prison Hill Strava segment. Then up to the second bonus. Coming back home the preferred route would keep you off of County Rd 10 but taking Syer to Hutchinson. Then continue east on Cedar Valley to Fifth and rejoin the main loop on Wallace Point.
John would also turn right onto Thorn to get off Wallace Point to a lovely quiet road with hard pack gravel and then left on Matchett to the waypoint.
Finally, it would be ‘full gas’ on the final Strava Segment on Crowley Line into 100 Acre Brewing.
Playing Hand
You will start with two cards.
You will get a card a Pastry Peddler and get a poker chip at the other two stops. The chips will be exchanged for cards when you get back to 100 Acre Brewing.
If you hit the two bonus waypoints, you will have seven cards and pick the best five for your poker hand.
See Segment Prize tab for Strava Segments Awards
FRAPPE LA RUE: 75KM
Frappe la Rue was John's subtle hint that it was time to cut the chit-chit and hit the road. This 75K-ish km ride will take you through the quiet town of Millbrook and visit a local favourite, the Pastry Peddler coffee/bakery stop with the option of another bonus stop in Bethany for one of John’s favourites – buttertarts!
The road will be rolling, with lots of options to hit the way points and to take on a couple of John's favourite hills. John loved taking his morning groups through the drumlins that surround the southeast of Peterborough, Zion Line, & Prison Hill (County Road 21 heading East out of Millbrook)
Route Waypoints:
1. Eagleson Road: Cards only
After crossing 28, head up the hill and the stop is on the right at the gates. There will be direction signs pointing to location. There will be no event volunteers at the station, please take one card and proceed on route.
2. Pastry Peddler: Support Station
Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Pastry Peddler open for coffee and other purchases
3. Syer Line & County Rd 10, Go Transit Parking lot
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
Important Notes:
a. Syer Line is under construction. Our route recommends taking Larmer to County Rd 10, then north to the waypoint.
b. Our route takes you west on County Rd 21 (King St) from Pastry Peddler – this ensures you have a chance to win on Prison Hill Strava Segment.
4. Matchett & Base Line, Stewart Hall: Cards only
There will be direction signs pointing to location. There will be no event volunteers at the station and please respect the owner’s property who has graciously agreed to allow use of their land. Please take one card and proceed on route.
Bonus Card Waypoint:
1. Fallis Line & Fire Route 601 – aka Dranoel Rd (7 KM)
Head west on Fallis and grab your bonus card at Fire Route 601. As an out and back it would add 7 KM to your ride… easy as pie. Fire Route 601 was a standard on Rob Brown’s Spring Classic. If you are on a gravel bike take it to Bethany!
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
2. Sprinkles n Things, Bethany (15-20 KM)
This is a full support station with Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Since you are this far why not grab a treat in Bethany and earn a wildcard?
There are a number of routes. If you have the right bike you could take the fire route 601 and the Victoria Rail trail – it is well used by ATV and can be rough and tumble but the shortest add on (total route 92 KM).
Best option for road bikes would be continuing on Fallis to Solanum Way to Porter Rd., then Weston into Bethany. Then take Dranoel to Syer – or the Victoria Rail Trail.
Total distance 93 KM.
Note: Syer Line is under construction between Tapley ¼ line and County Rd 10 and maybe loose gravel. Caution is advised, especially on the downhill. If not suitable for you, take Larmer Line.
What would John Do?
John ride a strong and steady pace to the Pastry Peddler and definitely sample the pastries before striking out to the bonus locations. We suspect he would want to take Fallis 6th line to Solanum Way and then Porter into Bethany, then head back to waypoint #3 along Syer line. Total route would be 90K or so.
Taking Thorn Rd up to the Matchett waypoint is also a good option, instead of staying on Wallace Point to Stewart Hall.
Finally, it would be ‘full gas’ on the final Strava Segment on Crowley Line into 100 Acre Brewing.
Playing Hand
You will start with one playing card and complete your hand at the four waypoints. You will get a card a Pastry Peddler and get a poker chip at each of the other stops. The chips will be exchanged for cards when you get back to 100 Acre Brewing.
If you hit the two bonus waypoints, you will have seven cards and pick the best five for your poker hand.

IT'S GOING TO BE AN EASY RIDE: 125 KM
John was a great navigator and rider leader. It was common to receive a text or phone call from John about the weekend's plan for riding, and he would recruit you with the "It's going to be an Easy Ride." However, after a few hard-learned lessons, these may be easy rides for John, but for most of his group, it would push us to the limit and sometimes beyond.
While the published distance is 125K, if you want the bonus wildcards this ride is north of 145K. A great adventure John would have approved of.
This 125 km route of favourite local waypoints will test your endurance. It can feature Peterborough's Famous climbs like Prison Hill, Lifford (18%), and Hayes Double Tap. Many of This route will have 5-waypoints, with multiple bonus hill climb waypoints for the cyclist who looks to challenge themselves for personal pride or to take KOM/QOM crowns on Strava.
Our route is a suggestion only and there is merit to heading towards the Omemee waypoint first, but you may miss some of the Strava Segments like Prison Hill.
Route Waypoints:
1. Eagleson Road: Cards only (30KM)
After crossing 28, head up the hill and the stop is on the right at the gates. There will be direction signs pointing to location. There will be no event volunteers at the station, please take one card and proceed on route.
2. Pastry Peddler: Support Station (40KM)
Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Pastry Peddler open for coffee and other purchases
3. Sprinkles n Things, Bethany: Support Station (6oKM)
Water, Hydration powder, and snacks
Sprinkles n Things is open for coffee and other purchases
4. Mary St & Sturgen Rd S. Omemee: Cards only (75KM)
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
There is a Circle K convenience store just around the corner (turn left) if water or food is needed.
5. Syer Line & County Rd 10, Go Transit Parking lot (95 KM)
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
Bonus Card Waypoint:
1. Lifford Road and St. Mary’s Road (70KM)
This one is well worth the climb up “Lifford Hill” for a wildcard.
There will be no event volunteers at the station. Please take one card and proceed on route.
2. Janetville Cantina and Convenience (80KM)
Since you are this far, head to Janetville for another wildcard and then take Mt Horeb Rd into Omemee.
What would John do?
This is the ride John would choose. He would be hitting the bonus waypoints.
Poker Playing hand
• You will pick up all cards enroute.
• You will get a playing card at Pastry Peddler and Sprinkle n Things. At the other waypoints you will pickup one poker chip. This will be exchanged for a playing card when you get back to Pastry Peddler.
If you get to the bonus waypoints you will have a seven cards and will pick five cards for your best hand.

Strava Route below is for basic waypoints. See Full Route Strava for suggested route including bonus waypoints.
John Hunter
John Hunter passed away 2021 and we miss him. Charlie at Fretori put it best.
"John Hunter passed away on Sunday. Far too early. He was the best friend anyone could have. He was a mentor, a friend and employer. He taught me about sales, business, the bike industry and two weeks ago he taught me how to use a crowbar better. If I ever needed advice, I could call him and the conversation was always a good one, and the advice was even better, filled with the perfect balance of seriousness and sarcasm and dad jokes. John’s dad jokes were the best, everyone knows that.
His energy was infectious and his attitude made you want to be a better person. Just being around John was good for the soul.
I did not even like beer but drinking a beer with John, it tasted good.
John loved to get people out riding. Once he got you hooked on riding, he wanted you to ride hard and challenge yourself.
This is what our Fondo is about - a ride, good food, sharing a beer with old and new friends and making a positive impact on our community by supporting our local healthcare.
A day for that will be good for your soul and hopefully encouraging you to take a bigger bite than you are comfortable and embrace whatever is comes your way on the day.

Raising Money for Cardiac and Emergency Care
This year we hope to raise $10,000 for our local hospitals.
PRHC and Campbellford Hospitals were both involved when John went suffered a massive cardiac event while riding a PCC Sunday morning ride.
So far we have donated over $15,000 to the foundations in the first two years of the HunTer Fondo.
